In the 150-plus-year history of Illinois State there have been only a few individuals who have distinguished themselves as student-athletes, not just during their time at Illinois State, but in the years that have ensued. D.A. Weibring is one of those individuals. D.A. has represented Illinois State University to the highest level on-and-off the course, in both his college and professional golf careers.
During Weibring’s time at Illinois State, the Redbirds finished first in 13 tournaments and second in 15 others. D.A. earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament in 1972 and again with the team in 1975. Weibring has continued his career on the PGA Tour and Champions Tour earning 13 victories including the 2008 Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship.
D.A. has remained an active and loyal supporter of Illinois State helping to raise more than $1.4 million for the Redbird men’s and women’s golf teams. In 2000-2001, his firm, Weibring/Wolfard Golf Design, designed and directed the renovation of the University Golf Course.
On September 7, 2007, the University Golf Course was renamed the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in recognition of D.A. Weibring’s commitment and contribution to Redbird Athletics and his achievements as a member of the Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA).
Dedication as presented by President Al Bowman:
Golf Course Named for DA Weibring!
Good Morning everyone and thank you all for being with us on this very special day! As Illinois State University celebrates its 150th anniversary we reflect on our heritage and honor the people who help make Illinois State the great institution it is today.
DA Weibring is one of those people. Despite demands as a professional golfer, businessman, husband, and father, DA has consistently found time for his alma mater. With 25 installments of the DA Weibring Redbird Golf Classic, this heralded alumnus has helped raise over $1.5 million for Illinois State University Athletics!
As a professional golfer, DA won five PGA Tour events and four on the Champions Tour including one just a month ago at the 3M Championship in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Although I am a relative newcomer to the game of golf I am a quick study and my short game is just one or two strokes behind DA’s and if he plays against me on number two, which is just 30 paces from my house, I’ll get him today! But I am smart and I am keeping my day job!
For 25 years DA Weibring has provided unfailing loyalty to Illinois State University, to Redbird Athletics, ISU Golf, and the Bloomington-Normal community. Few graduates have returned so much to a university. And now, with the naming of the Weibring Golf Club, we thank DA for his loyalty, dedication, and commitment.
As our Director of Athletics, Dr. Sheahon Zenger, reveals the new signage, on behalf of Illinois State’s Board of Trustees, this course will be, from now on, known as the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University.
