The Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University was designed in 1962 by golf course architect Robert Bruce Harris. It was originally designed with a regulation length 9 hole course along the outside edges of the property with a shorter executive length 9 hole course in the middle. The course opened in May 1964 with University President Robert Bone hitting the first shot. Today the 6,730 yard, par 71 golf course accommodates approximately 30,000 rounds per year and will host more than 100 tournaments and outings. These events include Men's and Women's Intercollegiate Athletics, State Champion Boys and Girls University High School home tournaments, the COUNTRY Youth Classic, the Illinois High School Association Boy's State Final, and many fundraisers for local charities and scholarship groups.
During the 2000 season the course was closed to undertake an extensive renovations project designed and coordinated by PGA Tour Player and ISU Alumnus D.A.Weibring and his company Golf Resources, Inc. The project included the installation of a new state of the art irrigation system, rebuilding all 18 greens and 2 practice greens, converting the tees and fairways to bentgrass, and reconstructing all bunkers to include drainage, Bunker Guard erosion control, and tour-quality Best Sand. The University Golf Course reopened for play in July 2001 to positive reviews throughout the state.
The administration is continuing with its commitment to improve the golf course facility on an annual basis. Projects are selected based upon several factors, including guest input, staff input, life safety issues, and affordability. Projects from recent years include:
2008 - A major Tree Resoration Project including trimming, removal, and planting;
2007 – Construction of a new championship tee box on hole number ten;
2006 - Installation of a new cart storage facility and a new fleet of EZGo Electric Golf Carts;
2005 – Installation of 4 new rain shelters, new water coolers, and a lightning detection system;
2004 – Installation of continuous cart paths; and in
2003 – Construction of 14 new tee boxes.
Long range projects include the construction of an expanded outdoor pavilion and the development of a Golf Learning and Training Facility.
